The event was organized by the Department of Basic Nursing, the Department of Geriatric Nursing MUW and the National Medical Institute in Ivano-Frankivsk.
- It is well known that inappropriate lifestyles promote the development of many chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. This is a huge problem of today's developing societies, as well as a challenge for the health care system around the world, in which, after all, nursing personnel play a very important role - says Edyta Krzych-Fałta, MD, PhD, Head of the Department of Basic Nursing - The purpose of the Olympics was not only to verify the knowledge and skills of students in the field of lifestyle nursing in civilization diseases, but also to strengthen in them the need to acquire new professional competencies, crucial to holistically take care of patients with conditions qualifying for this group of diseases.
What the struggle was about
The first stage of the Olympics consisted of solving a test of 50 questions on general knowledge of nursing. It was attended by 105 people. The 51 students with the highest scores qualified for the second stage. Thirty-six of them took part in the next stage II, which was held at the Medical Simulation Center MUW. This time, their task was to answer 45 questions of expertise in lifestyle nursing in civilization diseases. The questions were tricky, and the students had 50 minutes to solve them.
Eighteen people from eight universities competed in the final stage: State Vocational University of prof. Stanisław Tarnowski in Tarnobrzeg, State Academy of Applied Sciences in Włocławek, Radom University, Medical University of Warsaw, Medical University of Lublin, University of Kalisz, Higher School of Health in Gdańsk and Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin.
The students had to face the implementation of realistic clinical scenarios requiring a combination of knowledge and practice. Each student drew one of three clinical cases: high temperature, resting dyspnea or hypertension. The scenarios were performed in the high-fidelity rooms of the Medical Simulation Center MUW.
- During this stage, communication skills were primarily evaluated, including establishing contact with the patient, explaining actions taken and conducting a therapeutic conversation. Assessing the patient's condition by measuring basic vital signs such as blood pressure, saturation, heart rate and analyzing reported health symptoms also played a key role - explains Edyta Krzych-Falta, MD, PhD.
The committee evaluating the struggle also paid attention to the ways in which the situation was managed, including the effectiveness of the response to changes in the patient's condition and the cooperation with the treatment team.
